OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Giussi, A.R.; Hansen, J.E..
Sequential population analysis on Long Tail Hake (Macruronus magellanicus)from the Southwest Atlantic. Years 1985-1995. VPA on the Long Tail Hake (Macruronus magellanicus), based on data covering the years 1985 up to 1995, was performed to assess the current state of the stock. Simulation trials, inducing uncertainty about both the natural mortality rate and recruitment were also accomplished, to evaluate the risk of overfishing which is associated to different fishing alternatives, always under the assumption of a single and closed Long Tail Hake population. CPUE data were not appropriate for tunning, so the traditional VPA has been applied. During the period of study, stock biomass and spawning stock biomass showed an increased trend. Long and short-term...

Comparison of methods for stock assessment of European hake Merluccius merluccius in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern mediterranean) ArchiMer
Aldebert, Yvonne; Recasens, Laura.
European hake Merluccius merluccius is the main commercial demersal species in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean). This fish is exploited by French and Spanish trawler fleets and by small-scale fisheries using gillnets and longlines. Data on landings and the demography of catches by type of gear are now available for the period 1988-1991. The assessment of the hake stock was carried out using methods of virtual population analysis (VPA), or cohort analysis, based respectively on mean pseudocohorts and cohorts by age. The results of these VPA were then analysed and compared from a methodological point of view. The general results have confirmed previous studies with regard to the level of exploitation of the species. The two methods gave quite...

Irusta, C.G.; Aubone, A.; Simonazzi, M.A.; Ibañez, P.M..
In this paper detailed mathematical description of the generalized lineal model used and data grouping criteria are presented in order to estimate the relative fishing power of four categories of the hake ice-chilled fleet. The analysis was focused to the patagonian sector (41°-48°S) of the hake total distribution area. The fleet has systematically operated in the same fishing areas between 1989-1993. The variables that better explain in yields trends of each vessel category were analyzed. The fishing power of vessels with power higher than 1200 HP has been raising since 1990 because of increasing efficiency. These vessels generate three times more fishing mortality than the standard vessels (lower than 700 HP)

Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica King & Broderip, 1832): A new fishery in the Argentine continental shelf. Yield-per-recruit model was applied to the stock of castañeta (Cheilodactylus bergi)in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (Southwest Atlantic, among 34° and 39°30' S), in order to estimate the range of F0.1 values resulting from the uncertainty in the parameters of the model. Simulations with variations in natural mortality and recruitment were carried out, in order to estimate the risk of overfishing associated with different fishing mortality levels. The criterion that spawning stock biomass be mantained over 35. of its unexploited level was adopted. For an optimum age of first capture of 4 years, the range of calculated F0.1...

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Cordo, H.D.; Cassia, M.C.; Hansen, J.E..
Taking into account the commercial catches by the Argentine fleet and other fleets that operated around Malvinas Islands (SW Atlantic) in the 1987-1999 period, the current state of southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis) is assessed. A sequential analysis (Cohort Analysis) tuned, in an ADAPT conceptual framework with six independent indices of abundance, was performed for the southern blue whiting stock of the SW Atlantic. Commercial catch data of the Argentinian fleet and other fleets that operate around Malvinas Islands were used. The indices included catch per unit of effort of different fleets and data from Argentine-British research surveys. The analysis showed that the decreasing trend in biomass observed in previous studies went on during...

Evaluación pesquera del bacalao austral (Salilota australis) del Atlántico Sudoccidental OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Cassia, M.C.; Hansen, J.E..
Information about the austral cod Salilota australis caught in the Patagonian shelf including the area around Malvinas Islands (SW Atlantic)as well as some data from annual research surveys carried out as of 1992 to 1998 were analyzed. On this basis, the fishery was studied and the abundance of the stock inhabiting the area under Argentine control was estimated. To calculate the optimum yield as a function of both age-at-first catch and fishing mortality, the Yield-per-Recruit model was used. Some biological reference points were also identified and an exploitation strategy based on low risk of collapse recommended. Austral cod landings, although small, showed an increasing trend as of 1990 that reached a maximum of 14,900 tons in 1998. Most of the catches...

Evaluation of the Status of the Namibian Hake Resource (Merluccius spp.) Using Statistical Catch-at-Age Analysis OceanDocs
Kirchner, Carola; Kainge, Paul; Kathena, Johannes.
Namibian hake is the most important fish resource in Namibia. This monograph is a compilation of all the hake data, historic and recent, that has been used to inform stock assessment and management since the late 1970s. It presents the statistical catch-at-age analysis used to evaluate the state of the Namibian hake resource under different assumptions. This analysis treats the two hakes, Merluccius paradoxus and M. capensis, as a single stock. The data and modeling show that the stock has not as yet recovered to its maximum sustainable yield level, despite foreign fishing effort having been removed in 1990. Best estimates suggest the current stock to be roughly 20% of pre-exploitation levels; however this figure is sensitive to model assumptions. Signs...

Impact of technological creep on fishing effort and fishing mortality, for a selection of European fleets ArchiMer
Marchal, Paul; Andersen, Bo; Caillart, B.; Eigaard, Ole; Guyader, Olivier; Hovgaard, Holger; Iriondo, Ane; Le Fur, Fanny; Sacchi, Jacques; Santurtun, Marina.
Face-to-face interviews were conducted to identify the main changes in gear and vessel technology that may have improved the fishing efficiency of a number of French, Danish, and Basque fleets over the past few decades. Important changes include the gradual appearance of twin trawls (Danish and French trawlers) and trammel-nets (French gillnetters), and the increased polyvalence of Basque bottom trawlers. The results suggest that fishing effort descriptors that are not traditionally measured (gear type, groundrope type, length of net used per day, headline length, crew size, number of winch or net drums) may have a substantial impact on catch rates. Adjusting fishing effort using such descriptors may generally improve the relationship between fishing...

Improving the definition of fishing effort for important European fleets by accounting for the skipper effect ArchiMer
Marchal, Paul; Andersen, B; Bromley, D; Iriondo, A; Mahevas, Stephanie; Quirijns, F; Rackham, B; Santurtun, M; Tien, N; Ulrich, Clara.
The scope of this paper is to quantify, for a wide selection of European fisheries, fishing tactics and strategies and to evaluate the benefits of adjusting the definition of. fishing effort using these elements. Fishing tactics and strategies were identified by metiers choices and a series of indices. These indices have been derived to reflect shifts in tactics (within a fishing trip) and in strategies (within a year). The Shannon-Wiener spatial diversity indices of fishing tactics (FT_SW) and strategies (YE_SW) had the greatest impact on catch rates. In particular, FT_SW was always negatively correlated to catch rates. One may anticipate that during a fishing trip, vessels with high FT_SW have been searching fish aggregations for a long time, while...

Morizur, Yvon; Meunier, M; Huet, Jerome; Martin, S.
A displacement of the fishing effort of the French pelagic trawlers from anchovy to the seabass fisheries is observed. A such situation on a non-quota managed species requires to analyse carefully the evolution in the status of seabass stocks. The evolution of fishing effort, the production and the landings per unit of effort were studied from 2000 to 2007 for the bottom trawling and for the pair pelagic trawling in the ICES sub-areas VIII and VII. The fishing effort was assessed by using a threshold on the landings by month in order to select the most effective fishing effort as representing 75 % of the effort concerned with seabass landings. Length compositions and age-length keys were used to calculate the cpue-at-age series. A total mortality value was...

Pope's Cohorts Analysis was modified to extend its application to a wider range of natural mortality, M and fishing mortality, F rate values. The modified method maintains the simplicity of the one established by Pope and does not require to resolve any non lineal equation in each cohort reconstruction process. The relative errors obtained when estimating the number of individuals per age (maximum and mean in absolute value) showed acceptable levels within the five domains (M and F pairs of values) analyzed in this work. The new method can be adapted to a particular situation (M and F values range) simply solving an optimization problem (minimization of the maximum relative error absolute value) easily achieved using a calculation sheet or considering the...

Morizur, Yvon; Charuau, Anatole; Rivoalen, Jean-jacques.
The survival rate of Nephrops escaping through the cod-end was recently studied in the Bay of Biscay. Over the 45mm meshed cod-end was put a 15mm meshed net in order to retain the Nephrops escaping though, the cod-end. Soon after hauling escaped Nephrops were returned on the sea-bed into cages. After an inversion of 60-78 hours, the average survived rate was about 70 %. However it was found increasing with the size of individuals. The value obtained, which is only a result of- the action oh several factors, may be lower than the true value. I he evolution, of this biological parameter according to the mesh size is discussed in the scope of assessments

Technological Development and Fisheries Management ArchiMer
Eigaard, Ole Ritzau; Marchal, Paul; Gislason, Henrik; Rijnsdorp, Adriaan D..
Many marine fish stocks are overexploited and considerable overcapacity exists in fishing fleets worldwide. One of the reasons for the imbalance between resource availability and fishing capacity is technological development, which continuously increases the efficiency of the vessels—a mechanism referred to as “technological creep.” We review how the introduction of new and more efficient electronic equipment, gear design, engines, deck equipment, and catch-handling procedures influences the capture efficiency (catchability) of commercial fishing vessels. On average, we estimate that catchability increases by 3.2% per year due to technological developments, an increase often ignored in fisheries management. The documentation and quantification of...
